what's up, buttercup?

I'm Summer.

California girl, water resources engineer, vegetarian, phototaker. I like pretty things and nice people. Snarky radness also appreciated.

There’s a spa next door to where we’re staying. It has a garden. The sun was setting behind some oak and palm trees and I took some pictures. That’s a big bokeh dot, not the whole sun. I might love my 50mm lens.

Light Hunting: Day 3

1. grape leaves, 2. pink leaf, 3. berries, 4. filtered

I’m taking a month-long “Light Hunters” e-course from Vivienne McMaster and today’s the first day. The assignment was to go observe some light.

Smokey the Bear at Huddart Park

When I was little, wee little, like 3, my grandma had a Smokey the Bear stuffed animal. He had sewn on denim jeans, a plastic hat with an elastic strap, and beady black eyes. I loved him muchly. As I recall, the story goes that she got him from someone going to door-to-door, some forest service employee perhaps, filling some Roosevelt era jobs program, teaching the city folk about wildland fires. She kept him in the vacuum closet all throughout my childhood. Then my youngest cousin graduated from high school and Grandma gave him away or sold him. She kept all the teacups and got rid of Smokey. I question her judgement.

sometimes a good thing to do is to take a walk on your closest beach, bring your camera, leave your ipod hidden in a pocket in your hoodie, hear the crashing waves and the chirping birds and the sound of your own whistling, smile at the people you pass on the way, snap shots of waves and your dog and silhouettes of salmon fishermen, then find a little polished rock and prop your camera up and catch yourself doing something kind of like a dance.

wait, Time, stop!

We are in Carmel Valley for a little two-day getaway, and we’ll be getting back to the Bay on Saturday just in time to pick up the boys. We’re in one of those vrbo rental houses, which means I got to bring the dog, a kitchen and privacy, and little knick knacks not my own. So it is vacation except for the fact that there is some intense work stuff going on and so I spent a lot of the day plugged into my computer, emailing, phoning, phoning again, spreadsheeting and the like. This was ok, because Ken was on a bike ride for part of it, reading his book for other parts. In the end, the work thing came to a psuedo-resolution that makes an enormous bucket of stress fade to a slow drip and I feel rather proud of the role I have played in making something complicated and potentially dysfunctional become something that is on the path to a solution.

Anyhow, I am still self-photoing for my e-course. This week is a “hunting light” mission. It is overcast here, and likely tomorrow, but there is a skylight and so there are shadows. I thought this photo was fun. Hope your day went well and TGIFMFs!
