Why the Birth-Control Mandate Makes Sense It can cost $600 a year for prescription contraceptives. That’s a lot of money. By JEANNE SHAHEEN, BARBARA BOXER AND PATTY MURRAY It was a historic victory for women’s health when the Obama administration changed the law to require private health plans to provide preventive services including breast exams, HIV screening and contraception for free....

It’s not even 9 AM and my fingers smell like garlic, the result of packing Mr. 8 a shepherd’s lunch of baguette smothered in salted butter and slices of raw garlic.  Do you know how hard it is to find a good, metal lunchbox these days? Pretty much the only choice is “vintage”, where by vintage I mean items that all us 36+somethings could have carried uphill both ways....

Fact: when you move your cats in with children, you will be subjected to a play-by-play of their every action. “Jezabel is stretching!” “Kylee is eating!” “Morgan meowed!” The fact that you have explained to the child that you have lived with said cats for 15+ years and have witnessed countless such actions of theirs will in no way stem the flood of exclamatory...

I dreamt that I was hiking with a group of people. They were annoying. Lisa from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills might have been there (she’s actually my favorite, yes I have a favorite) and of course she was wearing nonsensible shoes and a too-tight skirt, while walking along granite trails you find in the Sierras. Everyone was bitching. There was some indication of a fire, which I...

Feeding the children is one of the most stressful parts of my day. It’s a process that has it’s own sound effects (“awww!”). I could elaborate on this, but only at great risk of being one of those mundane mommy blogs that articulates transactional details of this life of privilege, in words rife with poor me-isms. BUT THAT WOULD BE BORING (believe me, I know, because I...

christaland: And what if you could live off the words that you read, the words that you wrote, so that when you sleepily shuffle to the kitchen in the morning and muscle memory propels your right arm towards the coffee filter and your left arm towards the ceramic container you purchased during that impromptu drive to Mexico, instead of scooping out Starbucks Fair Trade Certified Italian Roast,...

Take action against SOPA/PIPA
jamiek: halfbakedidea: “Going black” is all very nice but the people who are voting to make this thing a reality aren’t looking at your Tumblr. They are looking for your vote to keep them in power, and you have to show them how they’re going to lose that vote if they pass the bills. I have written to both my Senators, and received responses from both. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) is a...

and so it goes...
Post-holiday child scheduling had the boys with their madre for a week and tonight begins a week with Ken, with us. I can’t overstate how good it is to see them after that long. Our normal schedule is closer to 50+/50 and after this week we will be back to that version of reality.  Aside from hanging out with das kinders, the highlights of my day were (1) the pink sky sunset as I drove...

I’m the PM on a little big deal job that has us as sub to another firm. Last week I sent an email to the prime clearly marked “consultant team distribution list” and asking for review of some strawman docs and about meeting attendees. No response, yo. Then this morning the mo’fo forwarded my entire email to the client. Good thing my original email was classy. But still,...

zappos database compromised
They’ve expired all the passwords, which means no one will be sending shoes to Nigerian Princes on your dime (and it wasn’t a horrible hack, as far as hacks go). Hopefully you are using unique passwords all over the web (you are using unique passwords all over the web, right?), but if you aren’t and you have a zappos account, now would be a good time to start. 1Password FTW.
